Upgrading this technology allows you to go on more expeditions and to colonize more planets.

Your maximum planet count goes up with every second level of this technology, starting with two planets on level 1 (then one more on 3, 5, 7, and so on). You can also send one more expedition in deep space with every square level of the technology, starting with one expedition on level 1 (then one more on 4, 9, 16 and so on). It also enables the expeditions to be longer, with +1 hour per level of technology, starting at one hour on level 1. Also, the Planet Slots in a system which you can colonize changes at levels 4 (3-13), 6 (2-14) and 8 (any position in a system).

In-Game Description:

Further findings in the field of astrophysics allow for the construction of laboratories that can be fitted on more and more ships. This makes long expeditions far into unexplored areas of space possible. In addition these advancements can be used to further colonize the galaxies. For every two levels of this technology an additional planet can be utilized.

Cost

This is the only technology, apart from Graviton Technology, that doesn't double in cost every level. The exact formula is as follows:

$NextLevelCost=BaseCost*1.75^{NextLevel-1}$ rounded to the closest 100

* E.g. at level one you have your Home Planet and one colony for a total of 2 planets. The formula for colonies (excluding homeworld) is AstroPhysicsLevel / 2 rounded up.
** The number of simultaneous expeditions allowed is the square root of the level rounded down (ex: $\sqrt{1}=1, \sqrt{2}\approx 1.4, \sqrt{3}\approx 1.7, \sqrt{4}=2,$ so levels 1 through 3 will allow one expedition at a time, while beginning at level 4 you may have 2 fleets on expedition missions at the same time, 3 beginning with level 9, etc.)
