Battleships are the backbone of any military fleet. Heavy armor, powerful weapon systems, and a high cruising speed, in addition to a large cargo bay, combine to make this ship a tough opponent to fight against.
Battleships are undeniably the most commonly used ship in the game, due to their high speed and power.
Evaluation
Uses and Advantages
One of the most Cost-to-Stats efficient ship in the game, Battleships are able to do the jobs of most other ships. Resource plundering, defense crushing, Death Star destroying -- in sufficient numbers, Battleships can do them all.
It is also important to note that Battleships can withstand hits from Gauss Cannons, making them even more desirable when breaking through enemy defenses.
They're used as crushed fleet on moonchances as an alternate to light fighters.
230 Battleships can destroy a Death Star with a 100% success rate, and still profit from the kill.
Shortcomings
While Battleships can do the jobs of most other ships, they do not perform well in special circumstances. If you are breaking through Defenses with thousands of Rocket Launchers and Light Lasers, use Bombers. If facing a foe with some Plasma Turrets, Destroyers or mass of Light Fighters are good options. If you are assaulting a mass of Light Fighters then Cruisers are your best bet. Therefore, while the Battleship is a great ship to have, it is not the best ship to use in extreme circumstances. Without the support of other ships, a pure Battleship fleet faces the danger of suffering significant losses in certain situations. The new addition of the Battlecruiser makes Battleship-only fleets less effective, as these new ships can destroy Battleships on a 2:1 ratio. Coupled with the facts that Battlecruisers can take more punishment (10,000 more Structural Integrity) and consume half as much fuel, many top fleeters are switching to using Battlecruisers as their main strike ship.
Description
Once it became apparent that the cruiser was losing ground to the increasing number of defense structures it was facing, and with the loss of ships on missions at unacceptable levels, it was decided to build a ship that could face those same type of defense structures with as little loss as possible. After extensive development, the Battleship was born. Built to withstand the largest of battles, the Battleship features large cargo spaces, heavy cannons, and high hyperdrive speed. Once developed, it eventually turned out to be the backbone of every raiding Emperors fleet.
